  • Phone in the Dugout, Notice from BCCI – But There’s More to This Rajasthan Royals Story

Cricket fans love a good controversy. But every now and then, a story comes along that isn’t quite black and white.

The latest one involves the Rajasthan Royals, a team manager, a mobile phone, and a serious health condition. And honestly? It’s a lot more human than you’d expect.

What Happened?

Last Friday, during the match between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, eagle-eyed fans spotted something unusual.

Romi Bhinder – the Rajasthan Royals team manager – was sitting in the dugout next to young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. And he was using his phone.

Now, for most of us, scrolling through a phone is no big deal. But in the high-stakes world of IPL cricket, dugouts are strictly regulated zones. Phones aren’t supposed to be used there. It’s an anti-corruption protocol, and for good reason.

Soon, videos of Bhinder on his phone started making the rounds on social media. The chatter grew louder. Even former IPL chairman Lalit Modi weighed in, demanding action.

BCCI Steps In

And action did come.

According to a report by The New Indian Express, the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has sent a formal notice to Romi Bhinder. He’s been given 48 hours to explain why he was using his phone in the dugout.

IPL Governing Council chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed the development, saying, “We have asked the ACSU to investigate and file a report on the incident.”

So far, so straightforward. But here’s where the story takes an unexpected turn.

The Health Angle That Changes Things

It turns out, Bhinder wasn’t just casually browsing or texting friends. There may be a genuine medical reason behind his actions.

According to sources close to the franchise, Bhinder has been dealing with serious health issues. He’s lost over 10 kilos due to illness. He suffers from asthma. And most critically, he was once hospitalized in Nagpur for a long period because of a collapsed lung.

Because of these conditions, Bhinder has been advised not to walk long distances or climb stairs frequently. The team dugout and the dressing room? They’re separated by about 50 steps and then 20 stairs. For someone with his health challenges, that’s not a trivial distance.

So Why Was the Phone in the Dugout?

Here’s the key detail: as per IPL protocols, team officials are actually allowed to possess phones and laptops in the dugout. The rule is about usage – making calls, sending messages, or anything that could potentially be used for corrupt purposes.

In Bhinder’s case, sources insist he wasn’t making or receiving any calls. He was simply scrolling through his phone. And the reason he didn’t walk back to the dressing room to check it? His health simply didn’t allow that back-and-forth multiple times during a match.

One source explained, “The problem was he had to walk at least 50 steps before climbing around 20 steps to reach the dressing room, and do the same to return to the dugout. That must have forced him to check the phone at the dugout itself.”

What Happens Now?

Bhinder has 48 hours to submit his explanation to the ACSU. The board will then review his case, keeping in mind both the rules and his medical conditions.

A source close to the team expressed hope, saying, “We are hopeful that the ACSU officials will keep Romi’s medical conditions in mind before arriving at a conclusion.”

The Bottom Line

Rules are rules, and the BCCI is right to enforce them. Anti-corruption protocols exist to protect the integrity of the game.

But sometimes, life throws in complications that rules don’t always anticipate. A man with a collapsed lung, asthma, and significant weight loss wasn’t trying to break the system. He was just trying to do his job without putting his health at risk.

It’s a reminder that behind every headline, there’s a human being. And sometimes, the full story is a lot more compassionate than the viral video suggests.

We’ll have to wait and see what the BCCI decides. But here’s hoping they take the time to look beyond the phone – and see the person holding it.
